| BALTIMORE, MD Fri, Feb 16, 2007 David Edgerley, Maryland Secretary for Business and Economic Development has named Clarence T. Bishop as Deputy Secretary for the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED). Bishop, who had served as DBED’s Acting Secretary, recently completed four years (2003 – 2006) of successful service to the City of Baltimore as Chief of Staff to the former Mayor, now Governor Martin O’Malley. As Chief of Staff, Bishop was instrumental in overseeing economic development in Baltimore.
“The Department and the citizens of Maryland are truly fortunate to have a professional of Clarence Bishop’s caliber to serve as the Department’s Deputy Secretary,” said Edgerley. “His wealth of experience in economic development at local, state and federal levels and his work on a number of high visibility projects will be a tremendous asset for the State as we work to build a One Maryland economy.”
In the O’Malley mayoral administration, Bishop was intimately involved in leadership roles in every aspect of the Mayor’s highly successful economic development program, resulting in Baltimore City presently boasting a record $11 billion in just completed, under construction, or planned projects. As examples, Bishop was deeply involved in the City’s successful effort to build a $305 million convention center hotel; oversaw for the Mayor the mammoth $800 million, 80-acre East Baltimore housing development and biotech park; and helped guide several large-scale redevelopment projects.
“My experiences with the City of Baltimore have given me a great deal of respect for the power of bringing jobs and prosperity to communities in Baltimore as well as across the State,” said Bishop. “As Deputy Secretary I look forward to the opportunity and the challenge of bringing Governor O’Malley’s vision of a “One Maryland” economy to communities across the state and ensuring that all Maryland citizens have good family supporting jobs and an excellent quality of life in which to raise their families.”
Bishop has also served on more than a dozen business and economic development oriented boards and commissions including the Baltimore City Planning Commission; Baltimore Hotel Corporation; Downtown Partnership of Baltimore; Baltimore Development Corporation; East Baltimore Development Inc.; National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture.
Bishop has more than 25 years of leadership experience in federal and local government including service as Confidential Assistant to the U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce, Chief of Staff to Georgia Congressman and civil rights legend John Lewis, and Chief of Staff to former Maryland Congressman and national small business advocate Parren J. Mitchell.
